Can ChatGPT Make a PowerPoint?

Short answer: yes, it can help a lot, and for some presentations it's all you need.

Ask ChatGPT for "a ten-slide talk on our new expense policy" and you'll get a sensible outline in seconds: a title, a point for each slide, maybe some speaker notes. Ask it for a PowerPoint file and it can usually make one too, with plain formatting you'll want to tidy up in PowerPoint afterwards.

So when do you need anything else? Mostly when the presentation is going to be shown to a room of people, and you want more from them than polite silence at the end.

What ChatGPT does well

Outlines. This is the hard part for most people: deciding what goes on each slide and in what order. ChatGPT is good at it. Give it your notes, a report, or a rough idea, and ask for an outline with one point per slide.

Wording. It can shorten a slide, make a title punchier, or rewrite a paragraph for a different audience.

Speaker notes. Ask for what you might say on each slide and you'll get a script to start from.

Where it stops

The design is up to you. A file ChatGPT makes is a starting point. You'll still open it in PowerPoint to fix the fonts, the spacing and slides that hold too much text.

Every change is a new request. Want the third slide shorter? You ask, and you get the whole thing again. Small fixes are often quicker by hand.

It ends when the slides are made. A PowerPoint file sits behind you while you talk. It can't ask the room anything, and you don't find out what landed until someone asks a question, if anyone does.

Where PPTX.ai fits

PPTX.ai is built for the second half of the job: standing in front of people. It writes your slides, and it can also put polls and quizzes between them. When you present, your audience joins on their phones by scanning a QR code, answers as you go, and the results appear on the screen behind you.

To be clear about what it isn't: PPTX.ai doesn't make PowerPoint files. You build and present in your browser. If what you need is a .pptx to email to someone, ChatGPT or PowerPoint itself is the better tool.

Use both

ChatGPT and PPTX.ai work well together, because PPTX.ai slides are written in Markdown, the same format ChatGPT uses for its answers.

  1. Ask ChatGPT for an outline: "An outline for a 20-minute talk on our new volunteer schedule, one heading per slide, three or four short points under each."
  2. Open the PPTX.ai studio, give your presentation a name, and paste the outline in. Ask for slides from it, and add what ChatGPT can't do: "Put a poll after slide three asking which shift people prefer, and end with a short quiz on the safety rules."
  3. Describe the look you want, such as "navy and orange, lots of white space," and every slide, poll and quiz changes together.
  4. Fix any small thing yourself by opening the slide and changing the words. That doesn't use any credits.

Already have a document instead of notes? You can start from a PDF instead. We wrote a guide to turning a PDF or Word document into a presentation.

Which should you use?

  • You need a file to send, or you'll present it in PowerPoint: ChatGPT for the outline, then PowerPoint to finish it.
  • You're presenting to a room and want to hear from them: PPTX.ai, with ChatGPT for the outline if you like.
  • You're running a class or a training session: PPTX.ai, so you can check with a quiz that people understood before you move on.

Want to see how the live part works? Read about polls and quizzes inside your slides, or open the studio and try it with your next talk.
